Sitka High Wrestling gets R.E.A.C.H.E.S Funding

Sitka Wrestling TeamUPDATE, October 17, 2016:

“Here are the new team pictures for the Sitka High wrestling  program. The wrestlers are so proud to wear the new warm up gear and they had fun modeling them for picture day.

The team traveled to Petersburg for our first tournament this past weekend and the wrestlers looked like a team in the sea of other wrestlers. They stood out while warming up together and they showed such team pride in their matching gear.

Thank you so much for supporting wrestling.

-Leslie Young, SHS Wrestling Parent

Sitka is located on an island in Southeast Alaska and is a community of 8,500 which is only accessible by boat or plane. Sitka High School has about 350 students in grades 9-10. Participation in the wresting program has dwindled in previous years but with a recent coaching change a new vitality has brought more wrestlers and interest for the 2015 season and now the 2016 season already has greater intrest than previous years. Even with the smaller participation Sitka had four wrestlers place 1st in their weight class for the southeast region and then those wrestlers continued on to the State level with one wrestler placing 1st in State and the other three wrestlers taking 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in their individual weight class during 2015.

Funding for wrestling in Sitka has always been a challenge mostly due to the cost of participation fees and travel costs to other communities. With the generosity of the REACHES funding Sitka high wrestlers will now have matching warm up gear with their school colors and logo, Sitka wrestlers will now represent their school with greater pride and team spirit. We can’t thank the REACHES staff and Walt Fisk enough for providing this funding and support to the Sitka High wrestling program.
