RE: Peninsula Catholic High School Wrestling Team Receives Equipment Grant

Peninsula Catholic

Newport News, VA -- Peninsula Catholic High School was pleased to receive an equipment grant valued at $3,000 from R.E.A.C.H.E.S. (Rewarding Educational Athletic Choices Helping Each Sport) to provide new equipment for the Peninsula Catholic wrestling team.

Peninsula Catholic's Knights wrestling team had a phenomenal season last year. They completed a regular season sweep of the dual meet season and won the conference regular season championship with a 42-36 win against Norfolk Academy. The Knights were also 5-0 in conference play entering the TCIS Postseason Conference Tournament. Peninsula Catholic had five individual champions (Galilee Kissell, Nick Zimmerman, Matt Rushing, Sean Kiddy and Mike Kamsiuk) in the TCIS Tournament and won the school's first TCIS Tournament Championship scoring 238 team points. They also placed 4th overall in the VISAA State wrestling tournament with Peninsula Catholic being recognized as the top Division 2 School in the state, and was named the tournament's "Exemplary Performers" for a mid-sized school.

Peninsula Catholic is grateful to the R.E.A.C.H.E.S. organization for this grant, which provided much-needed equipment including knee pads, gear bags, mat tape and cleanser, and more. Coach Ron Kavanaugh remarked, "This grant for equipment is amazing for our team. It enables us to outfit our wrestlers in new gear as well as direct wrestling funds to other areas of need. We're extremely grateful to R.E.A.C.H.E.S. and Mr. Walt Fisk for helping to advance all sports nationwide, including wrestling."

About Brute Wrestling
Brute Wrestling was founded in 1967, in Virginia, by retired U.S. Navy Captain Josiah Henson. Captain Henson was an Olympic bronze medalist in Freestyle wrestling in 1952 and the first American wrestler to beat a Russian at the Olympics. The company began as the first wrestling mail order business. John Purnell joined the company in 1975 and in 1977 became the President and majority owner. Shortly thereafter, Purnell moved the company to Reading, Pennsylvania to begin manufacturing wrestling uniforms under the brand name Brute Wrestling. At that time, the company began distributing through a network of sporting goods dealers. In 1989, a line of soccer uniforms was added under the name Liga Soccer. In 2003, the company product line was expanded to include custom uniforms for volleyball, softball and basketball under the brand name NeuEdge Sportswear. NeuEdge Sportswear quickly became one of the leading producers of custom sublimated team uniforms in the country. In 2010, Henson Group launched a lacrosse and field hockey line under the brand Evolve Team Sportswear. Today Henson Group Sports provides a complete line of top quality wrestling, lacrosse, softball, basketball and volleyball products and apparel to sporting goods dealers; amateur and professional athletic clubs and teams; and other buyers all over North America.
